Fired employees hijack HMV’s Twitter
Employees fired by the British entertainment retailer HMV decided to get even today by broadcasting their “mass execution” on the company’s official Twitter account, which has almost 64,000 followers.
The Twitter hijack occurred amidst a mass firing of more than 60 HMV employees. HMV has already removed the offending tweets, but a reader in the UK forwarded the following screen grab of the account mid-hijack.
“There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand. #hmvXFactorFiring,” read one of the initial hijack tweets. Judging from the screenshot, it looks like the hijack lasted about 20 minutes.
It’s a telling warning to other firms: If you’re firing people who have access to your social media accounts, change your social media passwords first!
Deloitte was brought on board to seek a way forward for the ailing biz but confirmed yesterday it was slashing 190 jobs from HMV’s head office and the distribution network.
